Thriving Internal Medicine Clinic seeks an additional Internist to accomodate a growing community. Patient admissions and call are required. This clinic was established in Athens, Alabama in 1982, and offers services in both internal medicine and nephrology.
The city of Athens has a population of approximately 50,000 people and is located in Limestone County, which has a population of around 76,000.
Athens-Limestone Hospital is a 100-bed facility with a ten-bed ICU and is equipped with CT scanning and MRI facilities.
The hospital call is currently shared between a total of six internists (two pulmonologists, one nephrologist, and three general internists). Call consists of one weekend out of six and one out of six weekdays.
We have participated in a number of clinic and hospital-based research trials. Prominent studies include:
The ISIS study: The original streptokinase study 20 years ago that proved the benefit of thrombolysis in myocardial infarction. It was organized by Oxford University in England.
The ALLHAT trial: A landmark hypertension trial. Athens Internal Medicine was the second largest recruiter in North America with about 300 patients. The total for North America was 40,000. This study was organized by the NIH/NHLBI.
The ONTARGET study: This worldwide study of 25,000 patients compared ACE inhibitor with angiotensin receptor blocker and also with the combination of the two. Athens Internal Medicine was the largest recruiter in the entire world with about 320 patients. This study was organized through McMaster University in Ontario, Canada.
The SPRINT study: We are currently planning to participate in the SPRINT study, which is a NHLBI-sponsored national study to lower systolic pressures in the elderly down to 120 rather than the current target of 140 in order to determine if the long-term outcomes are better.
We have also participated in various other smaller studies over the years. Both ALLHAT and ONTARGET lasted more than five years each.
The total number of active patients is approximately 3,100. The amount of scheduled patient visits for the past year is approximately 10,000. The average age of our patients is 62.
In the local community, we have sub-specialty support with two pulmonologists, a nephrologist, two urologists, and an orthopedic surgeon. We have cardiac consultation facilities available and vascular surgery consultation, as well as dermatology, ophthalmology, OB/GYN, and pediatrics. Our local census for dialysis runs around 50 patients at our local dialysis unit.
For cardiovascular surgery, neurosurgery, and other internal medicine sub-specialties, we request assistance from Huntsville Hospital, which is 25 miles away and has 881 beds and over 650 physicians on staff. We also refer burns and transplants to The University of Alabama at Birmingham, which is 90 miles away.
We have had four visa waiver doctors at Athens Internal Medicine over the past 15 years. The Athens area qualifies as an underserved, health manpower shortage area through the Appalachian Regional Commission.
